My life seems very normal when compared to most of the others in this band. At the moment it has gone a little something like this. Got born, went to school, finished school, went to uni, finished uni, joined Mixed Company. While I was at school, I picked up the trumpet and slowly realised I didn't sound like I was trying to strangle an elephant. I was trained as a classical player but soon got bored of playing Haydn's trumpet concerto so I sought other styles to play. For some reason I absolutely love playing 20th century wierd avant-garde style music and my final recital at uni was based on me seemingly playing the wrong notes at the wrong time! I studied music and music technology at uni and seeing as it's impossible for people to get jobs related to their degrees at the moment, I currently work in a leisure centre. At uni, I joined about 5 different music groups including a big band. This meant that I can now improvise, but I'm still not great at it. Mixed Company is the first band I've ever been in where I'm not supposed to have sheet music in front of me and thats definately the most challenging thing about it. I listen to a wide range of music from Beethoven to Copland, from the Beatles to Beck, from Miles Davis to Maynard Fergusen, from Ben Folds to Joe Hedges and from Pink Floyd to Porcupine Tree.
